MRSI data of patients with prostate cancer

چکیده
Objective To evaluate quantitatively 3D proton MR spectroscopic imaging (3D H MRSI) data of the prostate in patients with known prostate cancer using anatomical knowledge, compared with a single–voxel–spectra evaluation by blinded experts and automated processing methods. Material and Methods: MRSI data of 10 patients with histologically proven prostate adenocarcinoma, scheduled either for prostatectomy or intensity–modulated radiation therapy, were evaluated by two MRS experts using information on anatomy and localization of the spectra; and in blinded, randomized lists. Spectra were also classified by automated processing methods based on spectral fitting and pattern recognition. Results were compared using Kendall’s tau and grouped in a hierarchical segmentation. Results: The experts came to more binary decisions – using information of spectra from surrounding tissue in ambiguous cases – when evaluating MR spectroscopic images as a whole. Differences between unblinded and blinded evaluation were larger than differences between blinded and automated processing methods. Conclusion: An automated approach can be as good as a blinded reader. However, anatomical and morphological information are routinely used by human experts, supporting their final decisions. Using automated approaches considering anatomical knowledge could therefore improve an automated evaluation, supporting the human reader.

Optimization of clinical target volume delineation using magnetic resonance spectroscopic imaging (MRSI) in 3D conformal radiotherapy of prostate cancer
Background: For the purpose of individual clinical target volume assessment in radiotherapy of prostate cancer, MRSI was used as a molecular imaging modality with MRI and CT images. Materials and Methods: The images of 20 prostate cancer patients were used in this study. The MR and MRSI images were registered with CT ones using non-rigid registration technique. The CT based planning (BP), CT/MR...
متن کاملThe Role of MRSI in Target Volume Definition for Radiation Therapy of Prostate Cancer
Introduction: Recently, magnetic resonance spectroscopic imaging (MRSI), as a functional imaging method, has been used for clinical target volume definition. In this study, we used this method to define the target volume in prostate radiotherapy. Material and Method: In this study, we used images of 20 prostate cancer cases. MRSI and MRI images were fused with CT images. Then, treatment plannin...
متن کاملThe utility of magnetic resonance imaging and spectroscopy for predicting insignificant prostate cancer: an initial analysis.
OBJECTIVE To design new models that combine clinical variables and biopsy data with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and MR spectroscopic imaging (MRSI) data, and assess their value in predicting the probability of insignificant prostate cancer. PATIENTS AND METHODS In all, 220 patients (cT stage T1c or T2a, prostate-specific antigen level <20 ng/mL, biopsy Gleason score 6) had MRI/MRSI befor...

متن کاملAutomated Quality Control of Prostate Cancer Mrsi Using Independent Component Analysis
Introduction. The current diagnosis and localization of suspected prostate cancers requires TRUS-guided sextant (or more) biopsy with limited accuracy. MRI and MR Spectroscopic Imaging (MRSI) of prostate cancer patients can provide complimentary information to these techniques on the detection, localization and grading of prostate cancers with minimal risk to the patient [1]. However the spectr...
متن کاملSpectroscopy in prostate cancer: hope or hype?
Clinical applications of image-based radiation therapy for the study of prostate cancer have expanded significantly over the past years. The results of recent studies of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) combined with magnetic resonance spectroscopic imaging (MRSI) demonstrate that the MRI/MRSI exam is a unique method by which to noninvasively study the cellular metabolism and anatomy of the pro...
